Polar Bear
Ursus maritimus
Conservation Status: Vulnerable
Size: Males are larger than females; measurements are between 7-11 feet and weighing in between 700-1500 pounds.
Range: Northern Canada, Alaska, Greenland, Iceland, Arctic.
Habitat: Pack ice near water source so they can swim; prefers freezing temperatures.
Diet: Carnivorous; mammals such as: seals, sea lions, walruses, whales
Breeding: Polygamous; March to June.
Nesting: Tunnels dug in snowdrifts or caves. Litters vary between 1-4 cubs weighing 1 ½ to 2 pounds.
Notes: A source of meat and pelts for the indigenous population of the Arctic regions.
Warnings: Polar bears have been documented to attack especially when startled, hungry or with their cubs!
Description & Behavior
Polar bears are snowy to dingy white, though they are black on the nose and mouth. A polar bear has four wide paws that are ideal for swimming.
